Before you read this post remember: I am a Gemini and that means I have to do more than one thing at a time or I will get bored!
This summer I am reading 3 books, one professionally, one purposefully, and one for productivity. Each book serves its own purpose!
It is extremely hard to get reading in when you are a working mom and a girlfriend. I even have to give "Him" my undivided attention. So here is how I am getting in some reading. I am listening to one book during my hour drive home after work. I take one book to the gym and everywhere else I go to sneak as many pages in as possible. The other book, I leave at work to use when planning for literacy instruction.
So which books am I reading?
Book 1: In the car I am listening to Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun and be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes
-My hopes are to grow as a person. I have always been a "Yeser" saying yes to anything someone asked, even if I am too busy. I sometimes feel like a doormat. From this book, I want a little validation of my hopefulness. The idea was brought to me by my BFF, so I said, "YES why not"! Of course being a mom, how could I possibly read another book and actually take good care of my little ones. So I listen to this book on my hour long car ride home from work.
Book 2: In my purse I am carrying and reading when I get a minute- Mindset the new psychology of success: how we can learn to fulfill our potential by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D
-My hopes are high for this book. This book is a work related summer assignment, so there is a faculty of other educators reading the same book. I am hoping that we all grow and are reading to fully take on a growth mindset. For me this book is multifaceted. It gives information on changing your mindset in parenting, business, school, and relationships, all in which I am heavily involved.
Book 3: On my desk is The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers by Jennifer Serravallo
My hopes are to work faster and smarter. I want to get way more accomplished. The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers by J. Servallo is not a manual but an amazing resource that helps literacy teachers with explicit lesson language for over 300 reading strategies for readers from A to Z. Below are photographers of a fellow teacher who uses this book. For almost all of the strategies there are visuals. The photographed teacher bought a sketch book and recreates the visuals that she uses during instruction. The sketch book allows her to keep the visuals together and allows for the visuals to be easily displayed for the students.
What are you reading? What is the purpose?
